I am concerned ae to the
pollution effects due to the fact that we are having heavy
winds in the area and these winds lift clouds of this coal
dust and deposit it on the vegetation, roadway and river
channel. Everything in the area is coated with this black
coal duet.
In addition, what is the likelihood of a fire occurring in
these enormous piles of coal and what is the danger of an
explosion from spontaneous combustion?
Also, the coal is being transported from the Golden Eagle
Mine up to the New Elk mine where the washer plant ie
located in uncovered trucks and is laying down a layer of
black coal duet all along Highway 12 between the two mines
as well ae on houses, yards and everything else along the
route. There are some citizens along that route who are
presently in the process of circulating a petition
collecting signatures to stop this practice. Highway 12 has
been designated a scenic route and this black coal dust
along the road certainly does nothing to enhance the
scenery.
As you can see, there are several questions that need to be
answered regarding the stockpiling of coal in this area.
Please give me the advantage of your expertise in this
matter and also your advice as to what can be done if this
situation is indeed dangerous to the public health and
safety as I suspect. Thank you for your help.
Sincer ly,
Michael A. Osceola
County Planner
MAO:fc
Michael A.
