Walther
FROM: ~/(.J~
/
Dan Mathews Executive Director
Michael B. Long
Division Director
RE: Openipg at Farmer's Mine, Fruita Site _
As I had previously related to you, there is a small opening (14" in diameter) associated with the
old pre-law Farmer's Mine, immediately adjacent to the Fruita bond forfeiture site. The surface
associated with the Farmer's mine is actually within the "Permit Boundary" of the Fruita Mine,
but is located outside the approved surface disturbance azea for Fruita Mine, and was reclaimed
prior to 1977.
Landowner, Al Hoyl, has requested that AML close the mine opening in conjunction with Fruita
bond forfeiture reclamation, scheduled for late this fall. It would be logical and efficient to do the
work at that time. I assume that AML funds will need to be used for the closure rather than
Fruita bond forfeiture funds, although Paul Krabacher indicates that cost will be minimal if done
using equipment already on site. Krabacher indicates that, in order for AML funds to be
expended, Dave Berry needs to write a letter to Dave Bucknam clarifying that this is appropriate,
because the disturbance is within a permitted area.
The old Farmer's mine portals were in the Anchor Seam, immediately to the east of the Fruita No.
2 Mine Bench, on the east side of the draw which runs through the property. The Farmer's mine
disturbance was appazently-graded- and seeded sometime paor to initiation of Fruita No. 1 and 2
development-work, which occurred in the summer of 1977. Some old concrete foundations aze
still exposed, along with an old cistern. Some coaly material is apparent in a couple locations just
downslope from the portals, and one of the old backfilled portal openings has partly collapsed,
with a vertical opening apparently extending into the old works. The opening is approximately
14" in diameter at the surface, and is located approximately 1/3 of the way up the slope to the east
of the drainage, directily east of the reclaimed Fruita #2 bench.
Could you please discuss this with David, and let me know how you want to proceed.
Thanks.
cc: Paul Krabacher
