PERMIT NO. C-81-018
AS you are aware, there is a fire underground at the Deserado Mine which started at about 2:30 PM
on January 31, 1996. The fire started while a crew was working on the longwall panline near the
tailgate of LW-9 panel when a spark jumped and ignited an undetected pocket of methane. The crew
immediately attempted to put out the fire using extinguishers and water. This did not work and fire
quickly spread across the top of the longwall roof support. The mine was then evacuated.
Fortunately, all underground workers were able to walk out of the mine without any injury. The fire
fighting task was immediately put in place. Mr. Larry Routten at DMG was informed of the fire in the
afternoon of January 31.
One of the fire fighting measure taken was to drill two holes, at separate locations, from the surface
to the affected area and inject carbon dioxide. The drilling task started in the afternoon of February
2. We continue to drill at this time and expect to finish R within a day or two. A minor revision
application will be submitted to DMG once I have all pertinent information on hand.
We sincerely hope to contain the fire in the near Tuture. In the meantime, if you have any questions,
please call.
~~Sincerely~, 1-
Murari P.
