No. C-87-012
i5 ul
I have reviewed the letter submittal made by Kaiser Coal on June 22, 1987.
This letter reports subsidence monitoring results for the Hubbard Creek
subsidence monument line, performed on June 17, 1987. The monuments show
vertical and horizontal movements of up to 0.2 feet. In many cases the
movements have been upward.
The operator provides a footnote statement which explanis that these changes
were caused by a recent active landslide immediately uphill from the monument
installation. I have observed this active landslide during the last three
years. An ancient landslide existed on the slope and was exaccerbated by
Kaiser Coal exploration activities on the slope.
The monument grid in question has been in place since October, 1984. Visual
and survey monitoring has not detected any significant subsidence caused by
the limited mining beneath and adjoining Hubbard Creek. For this reason,
considering the cessation of mining within the underlying Somerset mine
workings, I do not believe it appropriate to require any remedial action at
this time. In the event that the Somerset were to be reopened we could
consider remedial treatments.
cc: Bob Liddle
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
