desired results of heavy stocking are realized, the stocking rate in following grazing
seasons will be adjusted downward to the proper use factor of approximately 50@ forage
utilization.
Forage utilization will be monitored by comparing the amount of unused forage in range
utilization cages located in the pasture. The following table will be used as the initial
stocking rate guide.
~ Utilization of Forage
SO@ (normal) 65~ 75@ (heavy)
Crazing 1 month 1.7 AU's/Ac. 2.2 AU's/Ac. 2.5 AU's/Ac.
Season 3 months 0.6 AU's/Ac. 0.7 AU's/Ac. 0.8 AU's/Ac.
5 months 0.3 AU's/Ac. 0.4 AU's/Ac. 0.5 AU's/Ac.
Note: 1 AU (Animal Unit) = a 1000 lb mature cow or a cow-calf pair
.80 AU = cattle, 2 years of age
.60 AU = cattle, 1 year of age
.20 AU = sheep, mature
.15 AU = lamb, 1 year of age
Pasture = 303 acres
Two kinds of livestock, cattle and sheep, will be considered for grazing in the management
areas. Classes of livestock (i .e. mature cows, bulls, heifers, steers, ewes, weaned lambs
or rams) will not be specified. Incidental use by elk and deer will also occur in the
management areas.
The general period for grazing is from mid-May through the end of October. Exact time
frames for grazing seasons will depend on weather conditions in a given year, livestock
availability, the overall grazing program of the operator chosen by Peabody and the
management requirements relating to vegetation manipulation and grazing intensity.
Turn-in and turn-out dates will be specified to the livestock operator prior to the
grazing season, taking into account the individual's operational needs. On-site
management contact and coordination with the operator wilt be through the Seneca II Mine
Reclamation Supervisor.
13-4-3
