Copies of the nomination .were
submitted to the Office of Surface Mining and the Division of Minerals and
Geology (DMG1. DMG recorntmends that the n.~mination be considered. .
The Canadian Strip Mine is in the North Park Easin in north ventral Colorado.
North Park is a high inter-n;oniane ba~;n bounder by mountains to the east,
west and south. Tl3e mine is nine miles east of Walden in Jackson County.
The elevation of the mine is about 8400 feet. Average annLlal precipitation
is 10 inches.
Final reclamation was completed in the fall of 1987 which initiated the ten
year liability period. In total 81 acres were disturbed and reclaimed. Due to
the coordinated efforts of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
(DMG) and the operator, reclamation issues were identified and resolved yin a
timely manner. This resulted in successful reclamation and a decision for
final bond release by 1998. This is only the second mine in Colorado to
achieve the permanent program reclamation standards.
The award nomination submitted by Slurco Corporation and Greystone
accurately reflects reclamation activities at the mine site. As noted in their
nomination, several reclamation measures were implemented at the site. At
the time several of these techniques had unproven results, including use of
a wood chip mulch, hand spraying for weed control and interseeding of
shrub species. These are now proven techniques that are in use at other
mine sites. A couple of other items for consideration are discussed below.
