Eon,;
RE: HAWR'S NEST MAINTENANCE Div is ion Director
Bids are being solicited for maintenance work needed at the forfeited Hawk's
Nest bond site east of Paonia. Work will include the excavation of the
partially reopened portals and consistent <re-)backfilling of the features
from the surface back to the constructed bulkhead seals of all portals with a
tracked piece of machinery. All the features are on a south facing aspect
approximating a 2.5:1 horizontal vertical slope. The total machine time is an
estimate of needed work however, time could exceed the 20 hours. The type of
machine required is limited to either a trackhoe with blade, a Cat E70B or
equivalent, or a track loader with a backhoe attachment, a Cat 931C or
equivalent.
In addition to the machine time requirements for backfilling, the
reconstruction of one feature's bulkhead needs to be performed to prevent an
existing methane leak. The edit measures approximately 12" high by 15' wide
with the existing faulty seal constructed at a depth of 20' from the surface.
Initial excavation will be required to fully access the portal for the seal
construction and for venting the area with fresh air. A methanometer will be
available for monitoring purposes. If methane concentrations exceed allowable
levels after the initial excavation, fresh air will need to be provided to
the work area through through fans or other acceptable means. The new seal
will be constructed against the existing faulty seal. Seal construction is at
the contractor"s option involving either shotcreting, native bulkhead
construction or polyurethane foam. Shotcrete or PUF seals will be constructed
with a minimum 10" thickness. If a native rock bulkhead seal is chosen,
construction will be according to the Bulkhead Seal specifications (19.0) in
the Inactive Mine Program's General Bid Specifications, 1993. PUF
applications will conform to qualitative requirements according to the
Polyurethane Foam specifications (9.0) in the General Bid Specifications,
1993. If there are any questions regarding this solicitation, I can be
reached at 970/248-7253.
