<br />12/88 <br />80--Progresso loam, 1 to 3 percent slopes. This moderately tleep, <br />well drained soil is on old terraces, benches, and mesas. It formetl <br />.n alluvium derived dominantly from sandstone. The native vegetation <br />~s mainly grasses and shrubs. Elevation ~s 5,500 to 6,800 feet. The <br />average annual precipitation is 12 to 14 inches, the average annual <br />air temperature is 46 to 48 degrees F, and the average frost-free <br />;~er~od is 110 to 130 days. <br />Typically, the surface layer is reddish brown loam 7 inches thick. <br />fhe subsoil is reddish brown clay loam 17 inches thick. The <br />substratum is white sandy loam 12 inches thick. Hard sandstone is at <br />a depth of 36 inches. In some areas the surface layer is fine sandy <br />loam. <br />Included in this unit is about 5 percent Barx soils, 5 percent <br />P.non soils, and 5 percent Bowdish soils. Also included are small <br />areas of Aquolls occurring in small drainages. <br />Permeability of this Progresso soil is moderate. Available water <br />capacity is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches. <br />Runoff is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is slight. <br />Most areas of this unit are used for livestock grazing in winter <br />and for wildlife habitat. A few areas are used for irrigated corn for <br />silage, pasture, small grains, alfalfa hay, and grass hay. <br />The potential plant community on this unit is mainly galleta, <br />Indian ricegrass, needleandthread, and Wyoming big sagebrush. The <br />average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 600 pounds <br />per acre. <br />309 <br />
