Elevation is 5,500 to b',800
feet. The average annual precipitation is 12 to 14 inches, the
.average annual air temperature is 46 to 48 degrees F, and the average
frost-free period ~s 110 to 130 days.
This unit is 55 percent Pinon loam and 30 percent Progresso loam.
The Pinon soil occurs under pinyon-juniper and the Progresso soil
nccurs under grasses and shrubs. The components of this unit are so
intricately intermingled that it was not practical to map them
separately at the scale used.
Included in this unit is about 5 percent Barx soils occurring
~,nder grasses and shrubs, 5 percent Rock outcrop, and 5 percent Ustic
Torriorthents.
The Pinon soil is shallow and well drained. The underlying
material to a depth of 16 inches is pinkish white loam. Hard
sandstone is at a depth of 16 inches. In some areas the surface layer
is gravelly loam, cobbly loam, sandy loam, or gravelly sandy loam.
Permeability of the Pinon soil .is moderate. Available water
rapacity is vary low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches.
Runoff is medium, and the hazard of water erosion is high.
The Progresso soil is moderately deep and well drained. It formed
in alluvium derived dominantly from sandstone. Typically, the surface
Layer is reddish brown loam 7 inches thick. The subsoil is reddish
brown clay loam 17 inches thick. The substratum is white sandy loam
12 inches thick. Hard sandstone is at a depth of 36 inches. In some
areas the surface layer is fine sandy loam.
3 00
