Same comments as above for the evaporation pond on the Piceance Site.
See Item 38 above.
40. Figure 2-2 -What aze the two ponds on the top, right side of the figure just outside the
boundary line? This figure needs a north arrow.
Those ponds are the existing test phase ponds.
41. Figures 2-6 and 2-8 -Describe in the text the Drill Pad Items listed --- e.g., what is a
desander pit?
During drilling, the water based - bentonite drilling fluid carries large cuttings of'the
formation and small particles of sand and silt to the surface. The large cuttings are
removed from the system by the shale shaker. They have the exact same
composition as the geological formations of their origin. In American Soda's
operation, they consist of sandstone, siltstone, oil shale, and nahcolite. For each
well, approximately 4,500 cubic feet of materials is produced. The small cuttings that
pass through the shale shaker are removed from the drilling fluid by using a series
of small hydroclones. The are referred to as the desanding units. The discharge of
these units is placed into a small lined pit referred to as the desander pit.
Mud Tank - a steel tank usually with a capacity of 200 - 300 barrels that contains the
drilling fluid during drilling operations.
Crane Truck - a truck with a hydraulic crane attached which provides lifting for drill
tools, drill pipe, casing, and tubulars.
Mud Pump -the pump which circulates the drilling fluid while drilling.
Too[ Van - a truck which contains small hand tools and small replacement parts for
the drilling rig.
Rod Deck - a piperack that is used as a staging point for all drilling tools, drillpipe,
casing and tubulars.
Work Platform - a platform that is used in conjunction with the rod deck to
assemble drill tools and handle drillpipe, casing, and tubulars.
21
