Long
Carbondale, Colorado olvlslon oirecmr
81623
RE: Coal Basin Mine Reclamation
Dea ~r rook: ~ L ~.
I wanted to take a moment to summarize the reclamation work which the Division
of Minerals and Geology plans to undertake at Coal Basin in 2002, and to
discuss a few issues we touched on during our site visit last summer.
Our primary efforts this year will be two fold: Stabilizing the pre-law coal waste
material pile locate adjacent to Coal Creek near the old Coal Basin town site, and
revegetating four Mine Bench Outslopes located beneath three mine entry areas.
Minor maintenance work, including noxious weed control, miscellaneous earth
work and re-seeding will be accomplished.
Uooer Coal Creek Proiect: This Project involves removal of coal waste materials
located adjacent to Coal Creek near the Coal Basin town site. The coal will be
removed from its current location, and will be relocated to a disposal site
approximately three hundred feet south. Topsoil salvaged from the disposal site
will be placed over the coal materials and over the excavation area, to the extent
that an adequate supply is recovered at the disposal area. Both areas will be
seeded following reclamation activities. We will construct barbed wire fences at
both locations upon completion of all other work in order to exclude cattle during
the first two growing seasons following construction. As part of this Project,
numerous shrubs will be planted at the base of the steep slope located south and
west of the coal pile. The shrubs are intended to act as a vegetative sediment
barrier in order to minimize the transportation of sediment from this area to
adjacent water resources.
In order to access the work area, the contractor will have to utilize the previously
reclaimed roads which extend from the Lamp House to Mine 5. When
demobilizing equipment from the Project Area, the contractor will scarify the road
