the first operation. The furrowing was done by dragging the teeth of the
bucket of a large front-end loader. The plots were then seeded and raked
lightly. After the seeds were covered, the nitrogen fertilizer was hand
broadcast on all the plots except the controls. The seeding and initial
fertilization was completed by 14 June 1974. The nitrogen fertility
treatments were applied in June of every year fora period of fi~~e years.
Results
Evaluation of the plots after three growing seasons on 20 August 1976
revealed the following:
1. Control
• Plants were extremely nitrogen deficient.
• Grass stands were thinner than 'in plots receiving nitrogen.
• Average plant heights ranged 5.1 - 7.6 cm (2-3 in).
2. One year N application; 1974 for a total of 60 #N/A
• Nitrogen deficient plants.
• Grass stand (number of plants) was about the same as other N
treatments, but plants were stunted.
• Average plant heights ranged 7.6 - 12.7 cm (3-5 in).
3. Two year N application; 1974 and 1975 for a total of 120 #N/A
• Overall, the plots appeared nitrogen deficient but
considerably less so than the plots receiving 60 lb N/acre.
In some spots a fair green color was still predominant. The
grass stand was about the same as the plot with 60 lb N/acre,
however, the number of leaves, height, and overall appearance
was much better.
39
