1. A control where no mulch was applied to the tailing
2. Two tons/acre barley straw
3. Four tons/acre barley straw
4. One year seeding of rye, rototilled after maturity and then seeded
with grasses
5. Two years seeding of rye rototilled after maturity prior to new
seeding of rye and then seeded with grasses
6. Three years seeding of rye with every crop being rototilled before
seeding with grasses after the third rye crop
All the cereal 'rye plots were rototilled in the fall, and reseeded with
grass or cereal rye again after snowmelt in the spring. The plot area was
limed with Ca0 at the rate of 4 tons/acre (CaC03). Phosphate wars applied at
the rate of 200 lb P205/acre (0-46-0) and potash was applied at
200 lb K20/acre (0-0-50). The lime, P, and K were mixed about 6 in. deep
into the tailing with a rototiller in June 1976. After germination,
nitrogen was broadcast at the rate of 100 lb N/acre (33-0-0).
The control and the 2 and 4 tons/acre barley straw plots were seeded at the
rate of 40 lb/acre with the Climax seed mixture. The three rye plots were
seeded with cereal rye at the rate of 40 lb/acre. The rye was hand
broadcast while the grass mixture was cyclone-seeded on 26 June 1976.
After the lime (Ca0) was evenly distributed, the plots were rototilled twice
about 6 in. deep, then the fertilizers (P205 and K20) were hand broadcast
and the plots were rototilled again. The straw mulch was pread by hand as
evenly as possible and then rototilled twice. On plots receiving 4
tons/acre straw mulch, the straw was spread in 2-ton increments and
rototilled twice following each application.
In addition to the above formal study, the area surrounding the plots was
limed, fertilized, mulched with 2 tons/acre alfalfa hay and seeded with the
Climax mixture at the same rate as the plots. About 20 <_pruce were
transplanted in the soil area south of the plots. Six clumps of willows
14
