review area. BLM inventories conducted in 1978 through 1980, and
monitoring flights conducted through 1985, did not locate any
roost or neat sites, or areas of winter concentration on or near
• the review area. Use levels of the North Fork oP the Gunnison
River in this region were low density, and only sporadic winter
use occurred on the uplands. The possibility exists for nesting
to occur along the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
Peregrine falcon, (Falco peregrinus), Federal i State Endangered
species, use has not been recorded on the review area. Some
incidental use is likely, especially during migration. The North
Fork region, including the review area, has some potential as
habitat. Peregrines are known to successfully nest 20 miles to
the southwest in the Black Canyon National Monument. Suitable
Heating habitat is not available on or near the review area.
Loggerhead shrike, (Lanus ludovic~anus), Federal category 2
species, use has not been recorded on the review area. Potential
breeding and nesting habitat is present. Loggerhead shrikes are
dependant upon the sagebrush and gambel oak shrub communities for
breeding and nesting habitat in this region, during spring and
summer. Their presence in this region during winter is uncommon.
River otters, (Lutre canadensis), State Endangered species; are
not known to be present on the review area, however, the North
Fork of the Gunnison River is considered suitable habitat. A
population exists in the Gunnison Gorge 24 miles southwest of the
proposed lease tract.
• Although it is possible for lynx, (Fells Iynr), State Endangered
species, to occur in the region they are not known to be present
on the review area. The range of lynx in Colorado is believed to
be confined to coniferous forests above 9,000 feet.
Grand Mesa Penstemon, (Penstemon mensarum), Federal category 2
species, is known to occur on the north side of the North Fork of
the Gunnison River in the Hawksnest drainage approximately 8
miles northeast of the tract. It's presence on the review area
is unconfirmed, but possible. This species occurs most
frequently in the aspen and oak stands between 7,200 and 9,500
foot elevation levels.
The following list of species have potential to occur in the
region but have not been found on the review area:
Blsck-Footed Ferret (1luatela nigripea)
Ferruginous Aawk (Buteo regalia)
Long-Billed Curlew {Numaniue amaricanus)
Mexican Spotted Owl (Strvr oecidentalia lucide)
Northern Goshawk (Aceipiter gentilis)
Southwest willow Flycstchar (Bpidoma: trailti eYtimue)
white-Faced Ibi• (Plegadis chihi)
whooping Crane (Oros Americana)
Adobe Desert Psrsley (Lometium concinnum)
Clay-Loving Buckwheat (Briogonum pelinophilum)
Spineless Aadgehog Cactus
•
(BChinocareus eriglochidiatus var. inermis)
Xontrose Penstemon (Penstemon retroraus)
Ointa Basin Aookleas Cactus (SClerocactus glaucus)
8ndangered
Category-2
Category-2
Proposed
Category-2
Category-1
Category-2
Bndangered
Category-Z
8ndangered
Endangered
Category-Z
ihreetened
Page 9
