soil (i.e., wood chip mulch, surface mulch, erosion control matting, etc.) will be considered in <br />the formulation of amendments. <br />While it is not desirable to fertilize native plant communities on a continliirlg basis, it is often <br />necessary to augment soil fertility for several yeazs while nutrient cycll;s and soil microbial <br />populations reestablish themselves. In particulaz, nitrogen is extremely mobile in the soil <br />profile and is easily lost from the system. This is of greater concern before soils have had time <br />to "settle" and before vegetation becomes fumly established. Therefore, application of soil <br />fertility amendments may be accomplished through multiple applications. For example <br />nitrogen may be applied at two separate times. Alight application in the fall in conjunction <br />with seeding may be used to promote organic decay and to stimulate the cazbon-nitrogen cycle. <br />A second application may be undertaken in the spring after plants have initiated growth but <br />prior to summer dormancy (cool season plant species management) or at the beginning of the <br />summer growth season (warm season plant species management). Should vegetation fail to <br />become established across large azeas, additional soil testing may be performed to determine if <br />nutrient deficiency is a contributing factor. If fertility test results :indicate soil nutrient <br />availability plays a role in Rvegetation failures, appropriate corrective measures will be <br />identified and implemented. For example, the application of custom fenilizer blends may be <br />necessary. Besides chemical amendments, cultural applications such as the interseeding of <br />nitrogen fixing plant species may be considered. <br />Salvage and reconstruction of soil will be planned and scheduled to avoid periods when <br />unnecessary soil damage would result from these activities. Soils that are excessively dry or <br />wet experience greater damage during handling than those with moderate moisture contents. <br />To the extent possible, salvage and reconstruction activities will be lxrformed when soil <br />moistures are normal and not at extremes (excessively dry or wet). ftlso, frozen soils are <br />readily susceptible to damage, so salvage during the winter will be avoided unless absolutely • <br />necessary to avoid resource loss. <br />5.1.3 Revegetation <br />Three distinct types of seed mixtures will be designed to meet specific revegetation purposes or <br />goals az the Yankee Gulch Project. The three basic types include Critical Area Stabilization <br />seed mixtures, Interim Revegetation seed mixtures and Permanent Revegetation seed mixtures. <br />These three basic mixtures will be formulated to meet the various needs azld requirements <br />associated either with specialized erosion control applications or with interim or permanent <br />revegetation establishment on disturbed lands. Anticipated use applications and.species <br />selection are described for each seed mixture type below. From yeaz to yeaz, the commercial <br />availability of suitable seed stocks may require the substitution of equivalent species in a seed <br />mixture. When it becomes necessary to modify the composition of any of these seed mixtures <br />(i.e., plant species substitutions or substantial modification of pure live seed percentages), such <br />changes will be submitted to the BLM for review and approval prior to use in revegetation <br />operations. American Soda recognizes that the need may arise to perform special augmentative <br />seedings for various reasons during the term of this project. When such plantings are needed, <br />American Soda will work with the BI.M to develop appropriate seed mixtlues to meet the needs <br />of these specialized plantings. <br />Critical Area Stabilization seed mixtures will be used when quick establishment of temporary <br />cover to protect high value resources from excessive erosion is the primazy focus. Typical <br />Critical Area Stabilization seed mixture applications include but are not limited to the following <br />applications: <br />Amaipn Soda, L.L.P.
