Notices of latent (NOT) to resume
uranium mining operations in San Miguel County and Rule 7.2.2 Notification of
Designation or Pending Designation by Office
Deaz Mr, Berry;
INFORM is estate-wide nonprofit organization with the mission of
educating the public about the dangers that exist when unsafe and irresponsible
mining practices are permitted. Through the dissemination of information and
education, INFORM helps organize residents in local communities most
threatened by these practices to protect water quality, quality of life, and dze local
economy.
We are aware that on July 17, 2006, International Uranium (LISA) Corp.
submitted a letter identifying their Notice of Intent to resume operations at six
uranium mute sites in San Migttel County, Colorado in the very neaz future
(attached). These mines are the Sunday Mine (Permit No. M-1977-285),
Carnation Mine ermtt No. M-1977-416, St. Jude Mine (Permit No. M-1978-
039 HR),`~West Sunda~Min t No. M-1981-021), and Topaz Mine (Permit
No. M-1980-OSS).
Consistent with past practice in other circumstances where mines were
proposed for reinitiation of training after long periods of inactivity which predated
the substantial revisions to the Mined Land Reclamation Actin 1993, we assume
that DBMS will conduct a review of the proposed operations to assess compliance
with state reclamation laws. Specifically, these mines should be reviewed for
whether they constitute Designated Mining Operations (DMOs) pursuant to
Section 34-32-103(3.5) of the Mined Land Reclamation Act, as mines that either
use toxic or acidic chemicals in extractive metallurgical processing or where acid
or toxic-formirtg chemicals will be exposed or disturbed as a result of mining
operations.
