SIERRA
CLUB

Trappers Lake Group
Box 772746 Steamboat Springs,CO 80477
Steve Wenner
Li/ision bf I`lining and Geology
1~]: Sherman St #'.'15
lien•/er', CO l3ir~i;3 n„„,,.
September 27, 199,

SEP 2 9 jg9.
t'. .. rJL
Re: i~olor•ado Yampa Coal Reclamation F'er•mit review -rangeland vs
pastureland status
Lear Steve Renner,
The Sier•r•a Club would liL::e the opportunity t^ comment on this permit
review. The Sierra Club represents 14ir northwest color ado residents,
1.1,uUir Colorado members and over 6~O,UOU members nation wide. Our
interest is to protect;, pr•eser••/e and enioy oLrr• wildlands.
fhe Colorado Yampa Coal reclamation permit originally proter_ted the
INlldn P_55 of 't L, ~.s area by pr•ovid ing for• r•ec lamest ion of the land to
r•anya=land-its original state. We see this area in oi.rr• daily tr•ave7.s
and it sLrr•e l.ooL::s 1.il::e pastureland and devoid of shr•Lrbs and natural
veyetati.on of the surrounding rangeland. It stands or_rt as a sore
thumb!
Is tt,e review of the permit solely because the Coa:L Company wants an
easy way out of abiding by thei.r• permit-' Sierra Club members are very
concerned that this is the case. The precedence of changing permit
requirements midstream is apgall.ing(or ~.s this business as usual'r') At
a minimum a pLrb:Lir_ hE=ari.ny held in 'the vic~.ntity of the mine should
nr=r=ur prior to any permit revisions, The permit changes affect the .
puhl.i.c.
5:ier•r•~a C1r..rb wc~u7.d li.L::e to see tL,e per•m:i.t remain intact and have the
].and retr.u•ned to, as close as possible its or•i~inal state, rangeland.
If there is a hearing planned be~+ore tree gover•ni.ng body we would li4:e
~l~;o be notified-.
