•
~ Illllllllllllllllll
Department of Energy
ROCKV FLATS FIELD OFFICE 99-DOE-03609
P.O. BOX 928
GOLDEN, COLORADO 80402-0928
MAY 2 ~ tsss RECEIVED
Mr. Charles C. McKay
Church Ranch Corporation
10050 Wadsworth Blvd.
Westminster, Colorado 80024
Dear Mr. McKay:
JUN 03 1999
Division of Minerals & Geology
Your May l0, 1999, letter mentioned the building of a berm on the west side of the Lakewood
Brick and Tile permit area using commor, fill dirt. I have discussed this with the Department of
Energy Rocky Flats Field Office staff, and there are a couple of concerns that we would like to
discuss with you in a meeting next week if possible. We wonder with the installation of Buildings
60 and 61 if the 1986 requirement is still needed. Another area of concern is that the imported
material may introduce more weeds and that the area, because of its disturbed nature, may be
conducive to further weed invasion.
There is also a question concerning the physical location of the topsoil that was stockpiled at the
initial opening of the pit, and how much material, together with this original material, will be
required to reclaim the pit from now until the pit is closed. The quality of the material in the berm
(common fill dirt) does not seem conducive to immediate stabilization and revegetation on the
berm itself until it is used, and we are concerned that fugitive dust may be a problem with our air
monitoring program. As has a]ways been the case with this operation, we ask that truck traffic
entering through the west gate occur after the hours of major traffic for safety reasons.
The proposed meeting would include both the Department of Energy and our contractor staff. Carl
Mount, a Surface Reclamation Specialist from the Colorado Division of Geology and Minerals, has
been asked to attend as well.
The Department of Energy appreciates your notification of the activity and we look forwazd to
discussing this issue.
Sincerely,
Yohn J. R pe
Deputy ssistant.
for Environment
Infrastructure
