There are uranium mine waste dumps at the 'Schwartzwalder alEd
other mines which should not be built upon nor used for
construction purposes. We refer you to the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Division (866-3567) for further information.
2. There are a number of uranium enriched ore bodies in the area
which should not be built upon nor used for construction
~j; purposes. Tde refer to you the Colorado Ceolcgical Survey
(866-2611) for further information.
3. A number of private wells in the Coal Creek Canyon area have
been identified as having elevated levels of radioactivity
(radium, uranium or radon). Although removal processes arE:
available for these constituents, careful design is requirE~d
to avoid additional radiation problems. Large scale
treatment facilities could engender radiation and waste
disposal problems. Only a small fraction of existing well:l
have been tested by their owners so the extent of the problem
is unknown. (There is not state jurisdiction or testing
program.) We would recommend that the Colorado Geological
Survey be consulted for risk areas before new wells are
drilled, and that testing be done before hookups are made.
