'' • <br />INTRODUCTION <br />This report presents the results of wildlife studies performed <br />between October 1980 and April 1981 for the Moon Lake-Deserado coal <br />transportation corridor, Investigations conducted during this <br />period consisted of aerial counts of big game, wild horses, raptors, <br />and sage grouse, The study area Includes the mine permit area and <br />proposed railroad and conveyor corridors, The railroad corrridor is <br />approximately 40 miles long, and extends (n a generally east-west <br />direction across the Colorado-Utah border just south of Dinosaur <br />Colorado. The conveyor corridor is approximately 3.5 miles long, <br />and extends in a north-south direction between the mine portal and <br />railroad loadout area, <br />Field work was performed by Robert E. Stoecker, assisted by <br />Nancy D. Lederer. Additional support was provided by Glen Smith of <br />the Colorado Dlvls(on of Wildlife and Steve Cranny of the Utah <br />Division of Wildlife Resources, <br />THE STUDY AREA <br />The study area is shown on the Railroad Corridor Map, Sheets 1, <br />2, and 3 (hereafter referred to simply as Map 1, 2, or 3), Observa- <br />tions were also conducted south of the railroad loadout loop toward <br />the White River (Map 1), which is the vicinity of the proposed <br />conveyor corridor and coal mine, <br />The habitat near the proposed coal mine consists primarily of <br />open juniper woodland (Juniperus osteosperma), big sagebrush <br />
