Proposed Modifications for Temporary Suspension of MinlnE Operations:
• The following new Section G is proposed to be added to Part II of the Permit.
G. Temporary Suspension Plan
The permittee may temporarily or intermittently suspend mining operations and underground
injection in some or all wells. During periods of temporary suspension, the permittee shall not
actively mine by underground injection of fluids and shall operate its facility in accordance with
the following requirements.
At the time a well is placed in temporary suspension status, there shall be no injection into that
well. Injection may resume only after a mechanical integrity test has demonstrated mechanical
integrity and written permission from the Director is received. In order to assure the possible
restart of well field operations at a future time, the wells will be placed in a state of temporary
suspension using the following procedures:
1. Notification
a. The permittee shall give advance written notice to the Director, as soon as possible,
prior to commencing temporary suspension of well operations. Notice shall include
identification of all wells to be placed in temporary suspension status.
b. A well shall not be deemed to be in temporary suspension mode until 5 business
days after the date that notification of temporary suspension is sent to the Director.
c. In addition to receiving written authorization to resume injection as specified in
II(G) above, the permittee shall give written notice to the Director within 5 business
days of actually resuming well operations and shall identify all wells returned to
service. For any well that has suspended operations for more than two years, the
permittee shall notify the Director 30 days prior to resumin¢ operation of the well.
2. Well Operation
a. Injection into each well will be suspended and the well will be depressurized by
allowing production flow to continue with the assistance of a booster pump.
b. The well and carbonate concentration of remaining fluid within the cavity shall be
stabilized to allow the well to return to service at a later date. During the period of
suspending the well, the volumetric flow and mass balance (of fluids moving into
and out of the cavity) will be outside of the limits set by Part II Section D(1)(i).
During the transition from normal operation to Temporary Suspension,
requirements in Part II Section D(1)(j) and their corresponding corrective action
requirements are waived.
c. The pipeline system used to supply injection brine to, and recover production brine
from, the well field will be flushed, drained, and sealed until such time as the
operations are reactivated.
Draft Addendum to SOB For Modification No. 9, UIC Area Permit No. C030858-00000 Page /o oj27
