-13-
keceiving Stream Standards
The Canadian River and its tributaries are classified by the Colorado Water
Quality Control Commission as "Bl", suitable for all raw water uses except
primary contact. The Water Quality Control Commission has deemed the
operation in compliance in light of NPUES Permit IVo. CU-0036854. IVo
violations of receiving stream standards have been reported nor identified by
the Division of Water kesources.
The Bourg 14ine will not impact the quality or quantity of ground water in the
3 wells within 3 miles of the permit area, since the yround water within the
mine site is hydrologically isolated from ground water tributary to these
wells. The Bourg Mine inay affect surface water rights through storage of
water within sediment ponds. The applicant states that the impact to senior
surface water rights will be minimal, since the flow of water in Idann Draw
contributes little to the flow of the Canadian River. The applicant also
states that water held in the sediment ponds would be available for
augmentation on call. The applicant has obtained an approved augmentation
plan for water stored in sediment ponds.
The operation is in compliance with the requirements of this section.
IX, Probable Hydroloyic Consequences of Mining and Cumulative Impacts
. ~..~.. n..i __ o nr r_ __., o rn c o _
This assessment of probable hydrologic consequences and cumulative hydrologic
impacts study of the Bourg Mine has been prepared by the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division (CMLRD). The cumulative hydrologic impacts study (CHIS)
was prepares pursuant to Rule 2.U7.6(2)(c). This CHIS assesses the probable
cumulative hydrologic impacts of all anticipated coal mining operations upon
the general area of the North Park Coal Field. Included in this assessment
are al] existing cos] mines and those proposed coal mines for which permit
applications have been submitted to the Division.
This study has been prepared using information and analyses contained in the
floury coal mine permit application, information and analyses contained in
other permit applications of mines located in the general area, and other
availaole information including site visitations by members of the Division's
staff. Coal mining operations in the study area include:
1. Walden Coal L'ompany -Bourg Strip Mine
2. Kerr Coal Company - Marr Strip
3. Wyoming Fuel Company - Canadian Strip
The life-of-mine areas of all of these coal mines are located within the
Canadian River watershed as shown on Figures 1 and 6. H11 mining operations
in the general area are open pit strip mines.
The coal seams to be mined, the total area of surface disturbance during the
5-year permit period and life-of-mine period for each operation are tabulated
in Table 1.
