RE: ARKINS PARK STONE CORPORATION MINE PERMIT APPLICATION FOR EXPANSION OF OPERATIONS WITHIN 57, T4N, R70W, BOULDER COUNTY,COLORADO SPECIAL REVIEW SU99-04 for 112 PERMIT INTRODUCTION: While the proposed quarrying operations appear to be simple, the impacts of such an operation situated within a residential neighborhood and within clear and unbroken view of the Town of Lyons are profound and are of great concern. We request the permit to be denied. The applicants have n:quested a permit to continue and expand open pit mining situated within a neighborhood that is clearly residential. Houses surround the property in question. At least two subdivisions within the Town of Lyons are within one-half (112) mile of the proposed operations. We have reached the ~polnt in the evolution of Lyons and the adjacent Steamboat Valley community when the industry of open pit mining is no longer compatible withi the needs of the social environment In which it Is situated. Mining operations in E3oulder County should adhere to the high, professional standards, careful planning, and complete and accurate documentation. The Arkins Park Stone application does not meet any of these standards. The historical legacy of mining scars in Colorado is one of irresponsible abandonment following cessation of oaerations. REQUEST FOR DENIAL OF PERMIT APPLICATION We request the permit: be denied for no less than three reasons: 1) Incompatibility of open pit mining operations with existing residential land use, re: noise, traffic, stormwater runoff, the visibility of lasting legacy scars of mining, the undetermined risk to adjacent residential water wells due to ml~ning activities, the undetermined risk to residential structures due to vibration generated by blasting and/or other mining activities. 2) The applicant has a history of non-compliance and violation of permit stipulations.
