Prior to reclaiming the site, the mine dug several test pits throughout the facilities pad to
determine the location and quantity of coal waste. The waste would be unsuitable for
reclamation because the mine lacked a source of sufficient cover material. About 2000
yds3. of coal waste were removed from the bench and removal of the remaining coal
stockpile also occurred. This material was trucked to the active pit of the P&M, Edna
Mine and buried with backfilled spoils.
Sunland Mining Corp. commenced mining activities in 1964, prior to the requirement to
inventory and salvage topsoil resources. As requested by the landowner on page 187.1 of
the permit application, Sunland Mining Corp. imported 6 inches of topsoil and applied
this in November 1992. Most of the reclaim was mulched and seeded before the winter
snows. The remainder of the area (.4 acres) will have erosion control mat placed as part
of a small area exemption demonstration. The seed mix will establish a vegetation cover
consistent with the anticipated postmining land use of grazing and wildlife habitat.
Soil samples were taken and analyzed. Fertilizer will be applied at the recommended
rates during the spring of 1993 when snow cover melts.
Apex No. 2 Mine, C-81-011 g May 5, 1993
