ROBINSON
BRICK " ~ "
COMPANY ° `
.,
June 16, ?004
Nlr. Harry Posey
Senior Reclamation Specialist
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: M-81-148
Chiefrain South Mine, 7efferson County, Colorado
_ . Dear Nlr._Posey,~ . ___

JUL 0 9 2004
Division of Minorels & $Y
Robinson Brick Company is providing notice of intent to backfill inert structural fill, generated
outside of the permit azea, at the subject mine.
"Che fill material will be derived from the stone cutting operation at our Denver building stone
sales facility. Specifically, this material consists of cut pieces of natural building stone, with no
mortar or adhesives. The stone pieces are irregular-shaped and generally no lazger than twelve
inches in any dimension. An affidavit is attached certifying that the stone is inert and "clean".
We anticipate placing approximately 80 tons per week of this material at the south end of the
existing mine-pit. The material will be placed at the mine site starting on or about September 20,
2004 and continue for a period of approximately five years. Rock material will be end-dumped
along the side of the mine pit. The rock material will subsequently be placed and compacted with
the use of heavyYequipment. Following placement, the material will be covered with, at least, 18
inches of material derived from the permit area. The thickness of applied topsoil will be
consistent with the site reclamation plan. The stone pieces aze relatively uniform in size and non-
compressible, and therefore, post-placement settling of the material will not likely occur.
Placement of the stone material will assist in site reclamation by providing additional fill material
as replacement for removed materials. "l;he stone material will not impact surface water runoff
quality, because the material does not contain contaminants, and local area storm water runoff is
diverted away from the mine disturbed area. Also, the stone material will not impact
groundwater quality because it is native rock material and contains no contaminants. Further, the
material will not be placed below the saturated zone.
1 can be reached at 303-783-3061 should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Robinson Brick Company
J
c
/ ! ~
Grego .Knell, C.P.G., C.H.M.M.
Environmental Compliance Coordinator
1845 West Dartmouth Avenue Denver, Colorado 80110-1308
gales (303) 783-3000 Toll Free (800) 477-9002 Fax {303) 781-1818
Web-site: www.robinsonbrick.com
