Rio Grand County has a gravel pit adjacent to the south side of this property
(permit number M1978066) which is in close proximity to an irrigation well and an imgation
reservoir on the farm.
Mr Hunter informs me that several years ago Rio County had heavy equipment working in their pit,
the vibration of which he could feel when he stood at the edge of the reservoir. Subsequent to that
time water is very noticeable in the pit when he puts irrigation water in this reservoir. Further, if the
reservoir is full in the evening, by morning it will be nearly empty (with no pumping ).
The NRCS informs me that they participated in a project which sealed this reservoir in 1977 with
Bentonite.
I have observed the water leaking along the North face of this pit when Ivan was using his well and
this reservoir, but I am not a geologist and cannot say definitely that the cause of the leakage is from
the mining operations. My uninformed opinion is that there appeazs to be a cause and effect
relationship. Mr. Shaver, Rio Grande Road Department, feels that there was nothing unusual about
the use of heavy equipment in the pit, but also does not know for sure whether this is the cause of the
leakage.
In an effort to be objective, I am requesting your organization conduct an analysis of this mining
operation to determine if the well and/or the reservoir have sustained off-site damage. I understand
that your findings are final.
Sincerely,
~,G~ /
Allan Anglund `~
CC. Buddy Shaver, Rio Grande County Road Deparument
CC. Ivan Hunter
