MT. GUNN150N MINE
TOPSOIL ASSESSMENT - 1981
Introduction
The topsoil monitoring plan in Section 4.4.1.1 of the Mt. Gunnison Mine M Iz R
Plan and OSM, MLRD permit stipulations 418 and 26 respectively, require tha riot
to any topsoil removal a soil monitoring program be carried out to determine if 18"
of topsoil is available for revegetation. To this end, an evaluation was conducted
by the on-site Environmental Coordinator to verify the soil mapping conducted by
Harner-White Consultants in 1980. This evalution updated previous removal depths
and topsoil quality information.
During construction activities two methods of topsoil handling were
developed. The first was topsoil that was disturbed temporarily for dewatering
systems, pipelines and temporary access roads. In these cases the topsoil was cut
to the side of the activity and very soon thereafter replaced and recontoured to the
original depth. .Most of these areas have been reseeded and mulched. This type of
topsoil handling reduced the amount and number of times the topsoil was handled
and therefore reduced the break down of fertility and structure of the topsoil.
Approximate y 25 acres ere disturbed in this temporary manner. The second
method of topsoi g involved topsoil permanently removed and stockpiled for
the or life-of-the-mine. Some 28 acres were disturbed in this manner.
Soil Sampling
During the second week of July 1981 soil samples were taken throughout the
mine site area. ?~ total of 16 pits were dug on the property. Their locations are
