Unlike rnnventtonal
reinforced mnacete, steel or timber structures which have any abUity to resist,
bridge or redistribute loads, and thus minimize visible signs of distress, adobe
structures iaunediateIy tell you if.somedd:tg is movln$ And yet, they have a
wonderful ability to accaatunodate movement while exhibiting distress and
atIil terrain standiTMg and att„cturaily~viable.
At the risk of using too many sports cliclt@s, adobe structures can "play hurt."
Mr. Pet-dteton also takes issue :with our statement that, "We understand that
other investigators have condt(ded drat ~surfaos movements due M recent
coal mine subsidence area likely:reason for much of the damage to the hot;se.
Our observations and interpretations of the dtstresc are oonsietent with this
explanation.'
We flnd:.it difficult to understand how that conclusion rnuld .be
misunderstood or mtacharacterized es unreasonable. .
Perhaps nn example may provide further clarification: O]'s blpod was found
at the .crime scene, which i9 mnsiatent with the theory. that he maunitbed the
.murders: Does this ev;•+~+~ in and of itself. prove that O] was the murderee?
' No. But it does provide circumstantial evidence to support that theory. ~ Did
we wnclude categorically that mine subsidence has caused a majority of the
distress in the Tatum? No. Did we conclude that recent mine ~aubsidence was
n plausible explanation for much of the damage iii the house? Yes.
We would hope that the technical experts mold agree as professtorutls that
there is some possibility that the mine subsidence has contributed -to the
distress in the house We may disagree with respect to the likelihood of this
explanation but to sltnply dismiss even the possibility that snipe subsidence
oould_have contributed to the distress in the Tatum residence is, to use I~r.
Pendleton's words, "lacking in• aaentific merit "
In..~,+mmary, we remain comfortable with the observations and pcelimuuiry
conclusions provided in our utter report dated May 23, 1995.
