BOX I g~ I Vah~ela Long
Dw sinn Ducaar
Colorado Springs, CO 80901
Re: GEC Reclamation
Dear Mr. Corlev:
Thank you for your letter of August 24, 1999, and for speaking with me regarding our plans to conduct
additional reclamation work within the former GEC permit area. As 1 explained during our phone
conversation, the DMG was able to secure funding through Severaltce Tax revenues to perform additional
reclamation wvork at the site. We were Qiven funds to use for reclamation at siX sites including GEC, and we
should have between $50,000 and $70,000 for ttse at GEC.
The focus of our planning to date is on the road located in the East Pit, and on the erosion which is occurring
in the East Pit. We do not intend to conduct any work outside of the Eas[ Pit area. Following our discussion,
I asked our staff engineer to evaluate the viability of moving the East Pit road to an alignment on the east
side of the former lower East Pit, which would briny the new road across the lower East Pit a[ a location
south of Magpie Creek, then along the eastern Flank of the East Pit. The current road location south of
Ivtagpie Creek and within the East Pit, would then be abandoned.
He has since conducted a survey of the lower Eas[ Pit, and is developing such a plan. It is our hope that such
action would provide a more stable road through the East Pit. Our focus is now on this road plan, and
monies would be spent to implement this plan, with any extra monies being used [o manage erosion
occurring in the East Pit.
Also, our engineer recently recommended that immediate action should be taken to provide short term hazard
mitigation along [he East Pit road where erosion appears to be jeopardizing road stability. We decided to
bring rock to the site [o till the ou[slope erosion voids along the East Pit Road.
Again, [hank you for discussing [he GEC reclamation with me, and please call or write with any questions.
concerns or suggestions.
-~,
Sincerely,
~'~ ~~
v
;.
Davi rrv
Coal Program
