STATE OF COLORADO
Riohertl D. Lemm, Governor
DEPARTM ENT OFNATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
Jack R. Grieb, Director
6060 Broadway
Denver, Colorado BD216 (825-1192)
June 10, 1980
TO James Schmieding
Mined Land Reclamation
FROM: C. J. Grand Pre ~~•
Senior Wildlife Biologist
SUHJ: Henderson Development Co., 1160-110
i`i~~~i~~~~~ii~~

JUN 23 1980
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
('olo. Dept. of Natural Resources
We have reviewed the proposal by Henderson Development Co. to mine
gravel in the area located at the intersection of U. S. Highway 1185
and Nome Street in Adams County. In our opinion the application and
attached reclamation plan appears quite good. We would, however, like
to offer a dew comments.
First, the best use for the lake and adjacent area may be as a warmwater
fishery and nongame habitat. Reclamation features which would aid in
the development of this habitat are:
a. Create a slightly more irregular shoreline.
b. Ravegetate the island with grass species only. Ducks and geese are
reluctant to nest in woody cover.
c. Slope the island at a 5:1 ratio on the leeward side to a depth of
two feet. Waterfowl can more easily negotiate this slope. The
windward side may have a 3:1 slope.
d. All or portions of the lake on the north and west sides should have a
slope of 5:1 from the waterline to a depth of approximately five
feet. Sand bars perpendicular to the shore may be established. This
will provide more spawning habitat and insure reproductive success.
Another important benefit would be additional safety for future
residents of Pinewood Estates.
e. Fruit and seed bearing shrubs and trees such as wild rose, plum,
cherry, raspberry, willow and Russian Olive should be used in the
revegetation effort adjacent to the lake.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Harris Sherman, Executive Director WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Michael Higbee, Chairman
Wilbur Redden, Vice Cheirmen Sam Caudill, Secretary • Jean K.
