The pilot site
%vas measured utilizing a June 1996 aerial photograph. The dimensions and appearance of the site
are shown in the CADCAM generated map and baseline aerial photograph, included with this
submittal.
The initiative may prove to generate several substantial conservation and post-mine land-use
benents:
1. Return the landform ecology of impacted rivers by reducing the number, size and
appearance of pits that often boarder both sides of a tributary.
2. Reducing net evaporative loss of exposed ground water by decreasing the total surface
area of ponds. This could provide a long-term remedy to augmentation considerations for
aggregate producers all over Colorado and the Western United States.
3. Increasing the range of possible end-uses for post-mine alluvial gravel pits:
a. Provides for diverse land-based end-uses not otherwise available for ponded
areas, as ponds are backfilled with ash as inert or structural fill.
b. Possible use for the creation of marsh or wet meadow wetlands and wetland
banking.
4. Provides a remedy to the stockpiling and disposal of coal ash by local energy providers in
Colorado and across the Western United States.
5. Saves valuable landfill area while lowering coal ash disposal costs to energy producers.
Considering that 80 percent of all coal ash is disposed of in scarce landfills and surface
impoundments, there is a genuine need to identify alternative means to disposal and
recycling of ash. If ash can be disposed of in alluvial pits, it would potentially free land
impoundments for more unstable waste.
P.O. Box 1489 Fort Collins.
