Memo to Ron Cattany 2 September 6, 2005
Henderson Mine for Underground Research Permit No. M-1977-342
In summary, locating the NUSEL at Henderson would have benefits beyond the addition of an important
and prestigious facility in Colorado, including the following benefits to natural resource conservation and
mined land reclamation:
• Valuable mining facilities would be converted to anon-mining use, creating jobs and tax revenues,
as opposed to demolishing the facilities and returning the area to range land. Leaving the facilities
instead of demolition of the facilities lowers the overall cost of reclamation.
• Continued dewatering of the mine provides 1000 gpm of year round flow to the North Fork of Clear
Creek that would be lost if the mine were allowed to flood.
• Continued dewatering will allow the existing ore conveyance tunnel to be used for trans-mountain
water diversions.
The only permitting actions required for the NUSEL would be an amendment or revision to describe what
surface facilities will remain to support the underground lab.
cc: Bruce Humphries, DMG (via email)
Carl Mount, DMG (via email)
Harry Posey, DMG (via email)
c:~Documents and SettlngsWCSVNy DocumrnisVirnderson undergound research lab.doc
