INTRODUCTION

In 1982 vegetation studies on the Mt. Gunnison project site
consisted of cover and production studies in both the affected and
reference areas of the dry meadow vegetation type. These studies
were conducted at the request of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Division (CMLRD) pursuant to the stipulations placed on Permit No.
C-007-80. Specifically, the scope of the studies is outlined in a
letter dated September 22, 1981 from Mr. Tom Gi 11 is of the CMLRD to
Ms. Cheryl L. Wehmanen of ARCO Coal Company Permits and Compliance
Group (now Anaconda Minerals Company Environmental Compliance
Group). The studies were conducted in order to establish a larger
reference area for the dry meadow type. The location and extent of
the new reference area were established during the summer of 1981 by
ARCO Coal Company personnel. During the 1982 growing season the
newly established reference area and the affected area were sampled.
METHODS
The methods for the cover and production studies were the same
as those used in the vegetation studies conducted in 1980. These
methods are described in detail in the permit application and are
only briefly described in this report. Cover and production were
estimated in randomly located 1,0 m2 circular quadrats. All clipped
samples were fractionated on the basis of species for grasses and on
