DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department o(Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Sr., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Phone: 13031 866-3567
FAX: 1303) 8328106
DATE: September 23, 1992
TO: Berhan Keffelew
FROM: Gregg R. Squire ~~ ~~
I have reviewed the maps and other information submitted by Holnam, Inc. on
August 11, 1992. I have the following comments/questions.
f coo
~~ qb
~`
~.~\ o
r
~ /e]6 ~
Roy Rompr
Governor
Michael B. Long
Division Dlredor
1) In the beginning of my memo of June 16, 1992 to you I stated that Holnam should
commit to grading all slopes (other than stable highwalls) to a grade no steeper
than 2H to 1 V. Has Holnam made this commitment?
2) As stated under comment #4 of my June 16 memo, Holnam should commit to
marking on their maps any highwall areas which will remain after reclamation which
are steeper than 2H-1 V. Also they should commit to building ramps of less than
2H-1 V at 1 /4 mile intervals across any highwall areas steeper than 2H-1 \/ to
provide access across the highwalls for livestock and wildlife.
3) Holnam must respond to comment No. 5 of my June memo (also item 5 ~~f the
June 24, 1992 letter to Holnam from Berhan Keffelewl. This comment i:: quoted in
full as follows:
"The approved mine plan page 3, Exhibit E -Reclamation Plan states that
"Where ample overburden is available highwalls will be eliminated." Holnam
should provide the Division with a map showing where the highwalls will be
eliminated and where they will not. Where they will not a plan must be
provided describing what slopes they will be reclaimed to, the methods to be
used, and the volumes of material required. Across section of these area is
also necessary in order to calculate the bond."
With this information a final bond calculation can be made.
GRS/yjb
,.. iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
STATE OF COLORADO
m:\oss\yjb\holnam
