SECTIONTWO mtroduct~on
This report presents the results from Part 1 -Design Phase as described in the URS proposal
submitted to Platte Sand & Gravel on August 8, 2005. The Design Phase consists of an
investigation and study conducted at the proposed gravel pit and future water storage reservoir
designated as Shazkey's Lake to evaluate the geology and geotechnical conditions at the site.
Based on the results of the investigation and analyses, recommendations aze presented in order to
prepare the site for use as along-term water storage reservoir.
2.1 SCOPE OF PROJECT
This phase of the project consists of a geotechnical field investigation, laboratory analyses, and
seepage analyses. Specifically, the scope of work included in this report includes the following:
• Performing a subsurface exploration to evaluate soil, bedrock, and borrow sources.
• Obtaining groundwater samples.
• Conducting a laboratory testing program and cutoff wall backfill mix design.
• Evaluating pertinent engineering characteristics of the subsurface materials.
• Conducting seepage analyses to evaluate the suitability and performance of the proposed
cutoff wall.
• Preparing a geotechnical design report including plans and specifications.
2.2 BACKGROUND AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Currently, Platte Sand and Gravel has a permit to mine approximately 800 acres on the northeast
side of the South Platte River. The mine is subdivided into numerous gravel pits that, at the
conclusion of mining, will be converted to water storage reservoirs. As explained above, this
report addresses the Sharkey's Lake Gravel Pit, which will be mined and converted to a water
storage reservoir. Accordingly, Platte Sand and Gravel plans to construct asoil-bentonite cutoff
wall around the perimeter of Shazkey's Lake as presented in Drawings 1 through 4. The purpose
of the cutoff wall will be to reduce the amount of seepage and subsequent dewatering required
during mining and, upon completion of mining, to meet reservoir lining criteria for gravel lake
water storage reservoirs that satisfy the Colorado Division of Water Resources, State Engineers'
Office (SEO).
N*:I'PR~OJEC~TS2223B240 PLATTE SAND GRAVELISUB 00\120 WORD PROC\PLATTESANDSGRAVELGEOTECHNICALDESIGNREPORT4.ODOC115-NOVAS\ 2-1
`/~ _ _ _ _
