Also, Baseline Vegetation Sampling on the Yoast Area.
Dear Mr. Pfannenstiel:
This letter will serve as a summary and MLRD understanding of our meeting of
April 14, 1990 and subsequent telephone conversations between us concerning
baseline vegetation studies on the Seneca II-W permit expansion areas and the
Yoast property.
We understand that Peabody will sample any vegetation communities that are
going to be disturbed. Generally, vegetation sampling will be done according
to the MLRD guidelines. That is, cover, production and plant density data
will be obtained.
In vegetation communities that will not be disturbed, only qualitative
descriptions will be done and a search for threatened and endangered species.
The following requirements for vegetation sampling will also be done:
1. Any vegetation community that will be disturbed will be sampled to
adequacy or 50 samples maximum if the spatial area of the community
is greater than 10 acres. The minimum number of cover transects,
as noted in the MLRD guidelines, will apply to these areas.
2. On vegetative community areas that are less than 5 acres, the
minimum number of cover transects will not apply. These areas will
be sampled to adequacy. However, no more than seven to ten percent
of any vegetation community should be samples destructively (for
production) to avoid change of the community due to sampling.
3. Sample adequacy for production must be determined on dry weights.
The possibility of using a microwave oven to field dry the samples
was discussed and this would be acceptable to the Division,
4. A comparison of the five newly sampled area's vegetation types with
the same types within the presently approved permit area must be
