Big Game Program -2-
This program was began in 1986, with eleven ponds being constructed. Fifty eight
ponds were built in 1987. Rig game animals are routinely sighted using these
watering areas. It is expected [hat the large scale distribution of the ponds
_„ eaill keep usage of reclaimed areas spread evenly over the revegetated area,
reducing impacts on revegetation activities.
In addition to stock water ponds, spring and seep development is also done to
increase watering areas. As mined areas are recharged, new springs are formed.
A spring box, with discharge pipe has been developed in one reconstructed
drainage, providing a year round water. source for wildlife.
Fencing
Fencing can have a major effect on big game movement and migration habitats. It
can also provide an insurmountable obstacle during winters of deep snow. At
Trapper, laydown fences are used in areas known to contain significant
concentrations of big game during the winter months or if the area is used as a
migration corrider. Fence's are laid down in the fall to facilitate big game
movements and erected in late spring when the majority of the animals have left
the area.
