Color Description
Red Graded Spoils/No Topsoil
Green Graded Spoils/Direct Haul Topsoil
Purple Graded Spoils/Topsoil From Stockpiles
30 132
50 304
7 25
The sample site positions were randomly located by overlaying a 200 foot by 200
foot grid system on a base map and using a random number table to assign spatial
(x,y) coordinates. Sample sites will be located in the field using a I inch equals 400
feet topographic map.
A 50-meter transact will be randomly oriented from each sample site point.
Shrubs rooted within a I meter by 50 meter rectangular quadrat located along the
50 meter transact will be counted by species and corresponding heights esti-
mated. Shrub species not occurring within the quadrat but present on the site will
be noted. Data will be presented by sample site number, shrub numbers in the 50
meter square plot and shrub numbers per acre and per hectare. Sample means and
standard deviations will also be provided.
Sampling will take place in late July and report preparation wi{I be completed by
early fall.
Results of this study will show The extent and pattern of natural regeneration and
reinvasion by various shrub species in reclaimed areas. Since the time of topsoil
and seeding is known, estimates of minimum densities attainable at the bond re-
lease period may be possible. Benefits of direct-hauled topsoil pertaining to shrub
regeneration will be shown and compared to the other two types of reclamation
sampled. Finally, density estimates will provide data for establishing an aS;tain-
able shrub density number in reclamation at Seneca II.
-3-

Sample Size Acres
. m r..~. ,....~
