Practid Approaches for Effecu~r E ~ S Coowl - 89
(95 x 80)
= 76%
100
If a recommended rate called for 381bs of seed per acre, SO ibs of this seed
bauh (PLS 7696) would have to be applied.
38 Ibs (cafe of application)
= SO lbs (mixture)
76% (Pure Live Seed)
It is of critical importance when using legumes in a mixture to make sure they
are "inoculated" with the appropriate strain of thizobia, or bacteria. This
procedures enhances the plants ability to "fix" or utilized nitrogen, a beneficial
plant nutrient.
Field Notes: Some high rates of certain soil sealants can inhibit genninarion of
sealing the seed coat to where water cannot penetrate through it. This is
usually not a problem in that these higher application rates are generally used
for dust control and in situations where revegetation is not part of the BMP.
R Growth rate
BMPs should be evaluated on their ability to enhance the growth of plants,
when plants are part of the system. Chemicals used to manufacture a product,
or chemicals which aze introduced into the soil environment upon breakdown of
a product can have a beneficial or detrimental effect on plant growth.
Growth rate is a comparison of plant development utilizing a selected BMP to
plant development without using a BMP. Generally, the test is done in a
greenhouse environment on planting flats. The plants to be ultimately used in
the field are tested, although sometimes quick growing annual grasses are
substituted when appropriate.
AM Moisture Retention
This variable reflecu the capability of a BMP to adsorb or absorb water. The
measurement is usually expressed as a percentage of material weight.
As previously suggested in the section dealing with infiltration, a material's
ability to retain moisture is not a beneficial characteristic; what is important is
O 1995 IECA
