The mill has been inactive since
1985. I would like to know what would be required by the MLRD board to permit this
facility and what size reclamation bond would have to be posted.
A brief overview of the facility for your reference is as follows:
1. The 108 acre millsite has been a historic nullsite since 1935. It was operate]
between ]935 and 1940 by the Grand Republic Gold Miiung Co. of Wallstreet as a
flotation/gravity mill.
2. General Chemical Co. -Allied Chemical Co. - (Presently Allied Signal Corl>.)
operated the facility between 1940 and 1974 to process 200tpd of florspar ore from the
Burlington Mine at Jamestown, Colo.
3. Hendricks Milling Co. leased and operated the facility between 1977 and 1'385
to process ore from the Cross Mine and Caribou Silver Mine dump reclamation project.
The mill was run sporadically during this period.
4. In 1987 the 15 acre tailings pond was covered with 1' of dirt and natural seeding
took place with local vegetation and tree cover.
5. The county has the property zoned existing general industrial EGI. Part of the west
end of the property is a natural landmark -the Valmont Butte -Boulder County
Comprehensive plan. Historic use is still granted.
6. The millsite was chosen because of its unique geologic setting. The propery is
bounded on the north by an impervious Basalt Dike that runs east/west. South of the dike
is Pierre Shale which is believed to reach depths of + 3000'. Historic milling operations
have placed their sand on top of the shale and evaporated their water. No running; water
exists on the property as its elevated well above the valley floor. This makes for «perfect
tailings pond area that can easily be reclaimed. Throughout the history of the millsite onl y
15 acres of the 108 acres has been used for tailings deposition.
7. The mill will require 3 months of mechanical repairs at a cost of $150,000.00 to be
again operational.
8. Hendricks Mining Co. would keep it as a captive mill for our Cross Gold Prfine
Operation and Caribou district mines. We would not nor would we ever consider custom
milling.
0
Mailing Address: Post Office Box 653-Caribou • Nederland.
