Box 2679
Colorado Springs, CO 80901
Re: Somerset Mine - Second Quarter Hydrologic Monitoring Report -
File No. C-81-022
Dear Mr. Balaz:
I have reviewed the second quarter hydrologic monitoring report for the
Somerset Mine and have the following comments: No significant changes in
water quality were found for Surface Water Site H-1 from May to June. June
water levels and water chemistry at Monitoring Well H-10 has remained
consistent with that reported on May 19, 1987. The negative eH value of -125
reported for Site H-10 indicates highly reduced conditions in the flooded mine
workings at Hubbard Creek.
Under extreme reducing conditions one would normally expect an increase in
solubility of heavy metals. A comparison between values reported for July 29,
1986 and June, 1987 indicates that concentrations of arsenic, cadmium,
chromium, magnesium, manganese and nickel have increased over time. Iron,
zinc, and various other metals have decreased in concentration over time. the
readability of the certificate of analysis submitted was not good. Please
ensure that future reports contain clear, readable information.
Thank you for your cooperation in submitting the 2nd quarter monitoring report.
Sincerely,

Thomas A.
