The overbank area should have riprap protection extended to a minimum of
10 feet beyond the channel bank after the area is totally reclaimed to
increase the stability of the channel. The riprap should have a mean diameter
of 1.5 feet at the channel bank and can be reduced to 6 inches at the point 10
feet from the bank. The overbank area beyond the riprap area should be
vegetated (Figure 3).
' V. SUMMARY
' The restored Newlin Creek channel was constructed differently than the
original design as suggested in the report "Determination of Hydrologic
' Consequences, G.E.C. Minerals, Inc." dated September 1981. Based on our site
investigation and hydraulic analysis, the as-built channel has more capacity
than the original design. The riprap protection for the channel is sufficient
' to stablize the channel. In comparing the existing Newlin Creek upstream and
downstream of the Prospect Pit, the restored channel also has more capacity
than those two reaches.
Since the area has not been totally reclaimed, once the pit area is
' reclaimed by Dorchester the overbank area should be reclaimed as suggested
having riprap and vegetation protection so the restored Newlin Creek can
' handle a 700-year, 24-hour peak runoff using overbank area.

1
1

1
LJ
