United States Soil
^epartment of Conservation
Agriculture Service
George Gregg General Manager
VALCO
PO Box 5?1
Lamar, CO 81052
Oear Mr. Gregg;

PO Bo>; 471
Lamar, CO 81052
Mtay 13, 1985
~: ~,~~~
On May 10,1985, John Bates and I inspected your stockpiles of
"topsoil" from the gravel pits north of Lamar. We found very
little evidence of erosion, since these stec4:piles are becoming
reestablished with Sand dropseed(Sporobolis cryptandrus), and
well protected with this grass along with annual weeds. At this
point, we feel that any attempt to flatten the slopes would
create more of an erasion hazard than it might solve. Therefore,
I would recommend that no disturbance be attempted at this time.
If you would like to sReed up the establishment of Sand dropseed,
you could broadcast 0.5 lb. PLS of seed per acre. I welld like
tv leave the seeding as a matter of your choice and not see it as
a requirement of any I;ind.
Where the river is trying to wash away some of this material, we
have no objection to the use of broken concrete as rip-rap, if it
is in large pieces and well placed. Native rvcl~. is generally
more attractive but creates a transportation problem, since there
is no large rack within the immediate vicinity.
If you have any further questions, please give us a cal' at
336-9058 or dray by the office, south of Lamar.
Si~n~ce~re~ly,
Robert L. Howland
pistrict Conservationist
