Task 1. Agency Coordination
Following review of the Vegetation Sample Plan by CMLR,
WRD biologists will meet with Mr. Mike Savage to discuss the study plan
to ensure that all is in accordance faith their rules, regulations, and
guidelines. CMLR personnel will be at the mine site on 24 July,
therefore, we propose to meet there and finalize the program.
Task 2. Verify Vegetation Map
Next we will conduct a thorough reconnaissance of the study
area and verify the existing vegetation type mapping. Changes will be
incorporated as needed.
Our final vegetation map will be produced on a molar topographic
or base and will illustrate the extent of vegetation types and disturbed
areas and shox the location of all cover, production, and density sample
sites, reference areas, affected and permit area boundaries, as well
as photo locations.
ide will calculate by planimeter the acreages of each mapping
unit per the permit and affected area.
Task 3. Location of Reference Areas
Following the vegetation type mapping, a plant ecologist will
locate a reference area for each affected area vegetation type. Each
reference area will be 3 acres or more in size and, if possible, located
within the permit area. In past experience, factors we have found
necessary to consider in the selection of reference areas that are comparable
to affected areas include similarity in: dominance of plant species, soil
type, slope, aspect, and current and past land uses. The precise
location of all reference areas will be closely coordinated with mine
representatives.
Task 4. Collect and Identify Plant Species
Plant species will be collected during the field sampling.
Plants will be identified by our field ecologists and submitted to
Dr. IJilliam IJeber, Curator of the Herbarium, University of Colorado,
for confirmation. iJe will preserve a voucher specimen of all plants
collected.
The plant list for this study will be organized alphabetically
by species per family per life form categories--trees, shrubs, perennial
graminoids, annual graminoids, perennial forbs, annual forbs.
Identification and nomenclature of plants will follow
Weber and Johnston (1979). Noxious weed designations will be according
to Thornton et al. (1974).
-1-
