Planning Dept.
P.D. Box 471
13th and Spruce St.
Boulder, Co 80302
Dear Mr. Tiefel:
RE: WESTERN PAVING, WENG FARM AMENDMENT
This letter is in response to the proposed expansion of gravel min'ng
operations by Western Paving Construction Co. at its existing pit east
of Lyons. The 194-acre parcel lies in secs. 22 and 27,T 3 N, R 7o W
and lies on gravel deposits shown as "F1" on the Colorado Geologic<Il
Survey gravel resources map of the Hygiene quadrangle. Based on our
mapping and on the location of Western's present operation, the area
proposed for expansion is definitely a commercial mineral deposit with
a reserve well in excess of 3,000,000 tons.
Based on the information presented and on my own visit to the present
operation, 1 can see no serious geologic problems involved with expansion
into the area west of St. Vrain Creek. Final slopes and buffer zones
along the creek appear to be quite adequate. The accompanying repcrt
by Wheeler and Associates shows that the company's original water-rights
purchases will adequately offset the increased evaporation in the final
ponds. I strongly concur with the Wheeler recommendation of additional
water table monitoring wells, which likely have been installed by now.
I therefore urge approval of the proposed amendment to the existing special-
use permit within the conditions of state and county regulations.
If I can be of assistance, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Stephen D.
