•
•
5.3 SUITABILITY AS A PLANT GROWTH MEDIA
Table 5-3 is an evaluation of each horizon of each soil of the report area as a
plant growth media. The evaluation is based on a variety of sources of information:
site specific data as reported in Table 5-2, soil chemical and physical properties
as reported in the SCS Soil Survey Interpretation Records (Appendix II), and soil
series descriptions (Section 3.0).
The overall rating given for each horizon is the rating for the most limiting para-
~ meter. In many cases the limiting factors are texture and coarse fragments. In
most profiles suitability decreases with depth. The horizons recommended for strip-
ping should provide a good to fair source of plant growth media.
•
5.4 YOLUMES OF MATERIAL AVAILABLE
Table 5-4 gives volumes of material available along the portion of the road to be
~ disturbed. The volumes were computed as follows: the acreage of each map unit
along the portion of the road to be widened was estimated. Approximately 3.3 t 1.3
acres will be disturbed. The percent of the map unit occupied by each series (from
Section 2.0) was tabulated. The horizons and their ratings were also tabulated
~ (from Table 5-3). The percentage of map unit occupied multiplied by the acres to be
disturbed gives an estimate of acreage of each series to be disturbed. Acreage of
each series multiplied by the thickness of material to be stripped gives a volume of
material. Table 5-4 shows that 8.4 t 3.6 acre-feet of material have been recom-
~ mended for stripping.
5.5 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STRIPPING SOILS
The mapping, sampling, description, correlation, and analysis of the soils informa-
tion indicates that the soils of the site are useful material for the reclamation of
disturbed lands. Each profile has varying thickness of materials that could be
~ used. A few areas are too shallow or too rocky for use. The requirement to save
suitable material during construction activities requires that the soil information
~ - 17 -
