3. TEXT CHANGES <br />4.18.2.2 Water Resources <br />There would be the potential for ashort-term reduction <br />in the flow of Yellow Creek (Table 4-3) as a result of <br />the production of water for use by the mine. This reduction <br />in flow could exist for many years after the end of mine <br />life. There would be the potential for along-term impact <br />[o the water quality of the base of the lower aquifer bequse <br />of the amount of inaease io the surface area of the base <br />of the lower aquifer in contact with :aline minerals as a <br />result of cavity collapse. This potential impact would persist <br />for the foreseeable future (less than 100 years) and would <br />be locally significant if the state standard for total dissolved <br />solids concentration was exceeded. <br />Page 4-32 <br />(11) <br />Column 1, paragraph 5, sentence l: "...around the <br />area would shift to ...:' should read: "...around the <br />area may shift to ... '• <br />4.18.4,2 Water Resources <br />The mine site is approximately 6 miles from the C-a <br />Prototype Oil Shale Tract. The baseline Cor this environ- <br />mental impact statemem assumes that C-a tract will be in <br />production while this mine is operating. The open-pit mine <br />on Tract C-a would cause very significant impacts to the <br />groundwater system (USDI, BLM 1985b). The dewatering <br />that would be required for mine development could change <br />the rate and duection of flow in the groundwater within <br />the sodium leases. ALw, dewateriog the pit for C-a could <br />dramatically lower water level and change water quality <br />parameters at the sodium mine site. A detailed plan for <br />the development of Tray C-a is not available. It is therefore <br />not possible to tell with any accuracy what impacts to the <br />groundwater, caused by C-a, would extend to the sodium <br />leases. All that can be said is that these impacts are likely <br />to be very significant. Impacts to the groundwater from <br />the proposed sodium mine are analyzed against existing <br />conditions. The development of Tray C-a, however, could <br />change existitg conditions in the groundwater system <br />beneath the sodium leases so dramatically that impacts from <br />the proposed sodium mine would be undefinable. The <br />impacts related to the sodium mine are insignificant by <br />comparison with C-a. <br />(11) <br />Column 1, Section 4.18.3.2, Water Resources: Replace <br />entire section. <br />4.18.3.2 Water Resources <br />The water remaining in the cavities alier production ceased <br />would be unavailable for all other potential other uses for <br />the foreseeable future. There would be the potential for <br />an irteversible impact to the water quality of the base of <br />the lower aquifer because of the amount of increase in the <br />surface area of the base of the lower aquifer in contact <br />with saline minerals as a result of cavity collapse.
