That a discrepancy in the seed rate
used on the reseeding of the sediment ponds at Kaiser Steel
Resources, Colorado Coal Mine No. 1 has been found. The
seeding rate furnished to you specified all seed was to be
planted at Pure Live Seed rate. It was discovered that all
the shrubs were planted at bulk rate, which translates to
only 20 to 35 percent of the PLS Lbs of seed specified has
been planted, according to the seed tags furnished to us by
your subcontractor, Geisman Seeding. All of the grasses
appear to have been planted at the correct PLS rate. In
discussions with Geisman seeding, and the seed supplier,
Arkansas Valley seed Co., no explanation could be given for
this discrepancy.
Kaiser Steel Resources feels, to remedy this situation,
you will replant the correct PLS rate of the shrubs specified
in the contract at your expense. This should be done in early
spring 1993 to take advantage of the spring moisture. To keep
the damage to a minimum, and to not destroy what vegetation
is on the site, we recommend the seeding should be done by
using a drill seeder, without preparing the soil by discing.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me
at the number above.
.
