•
METHODS

Selection of Study Sites
Reclamation activities at the Seneca II Mine have been ongoing since the early 70's. This
has resulted in a variety of methods used in reclamation which can be associated with
changes in regulatory requirements, methodologies, and technology. Three general types
of reclamation were subsequently sampled at the Seneca II Mine and are listed below:
graded spoils, no topsoil; graded spoils, topsoil from stockpiles; graded spoils, direct
hauled topsoil.
Prior to selection of sample sites, area coverage of the three types to be studied was
delineated on a I"=400'topographic base map. The areas selected were based on annual
reclamation reports for the Seneca II Mine and were further verified through consulta-
tions with the Reclamation Supervisor at the mine and the use of current aerial photo-
graphy. The areal extent of the three types studied was determined through the use of a
polar planimeter.
Sampling Design
All sample sites were selected by a random process in which a 200 x 200 foot grid system
was overlain on the I"=400' topographic base map and a random number table used to
assign spatial (x, y) coordinates. Sample size was based on previous vegetation studies
conducted by Western Resource Development Corporation of Boulder, Colorado and
Guideline No. 2 (Vegetation) of the Wyoming Department of Environmental duality
(DES). Sample sizes were as follows:
Graded spoils/no topsoil 30
Graded spoils/direct haul topsoil 50
Graded spoils/topsoil from stockpiles 7
Sample sites were located in the field during August and September, 1982 using a I"=400'
topographic map with a 10 foot contour interval.
Time of Sampling
Sampling occurred during two different time periods. Approximately half of all sites
were sampled during the period of 3/4 August 1982. The remaining sites were sampled
during the period of 23/24 September 1982.
-3-
