erosional surface when the river was at an elevation of about 8,200 feet. These Upland Terrace
deposits have since become eroded as the Canadian River and its tributaries have become
incised. In the azea of the Bourg Mine, these Upland Terrace deposits have been completely
eroded away by Mann Draw. Remnant exposures of the Upland Alluvial Terrace deposits still
cap mesa tops in the area of the Marr Strip and Canadian Strip.
The alluvium is present in the stream valleys of northeasterly-flowing tributaries of the Canadian
River. These bodies of alluvium are usually poorly sorted and fine-grained. Coarse sands and
gravels, when present, usually are contained in discontinuous lenticular pockets within the finer-
grained alluvium.
Mann Draw and its tributary gulches contain up to 20 feet of fine-grained alluvial deposits. The
alluvium consists of loam, silt and sand derived from the weathering of the Pierre Shale.
References Cited
Beekly, A.L., 1915, Geology and coal resources of North Pazk, Colorado:
U.S. Geological Survey, Bulletin 596, 121 p.
Hail, W.J., Jr., 1968, Geology of Southwestern North Pazk and vicinity, Colorado:
U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1257.
Kerr Coal Company, 1980, Marr Strip permit application to the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Division, File C-006-80
Madden, D.H., 1978, Exploration drilling in the Coalmont coal field, Jackson
County, Colorado, June-November, 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open
File Report 77-887, 138 p.
Madden, D.H., 1978, Exploration drilling in the McCallum coal field, Jackson
County, Colorado, August-November, 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open
File Report 77-888, 80 p.
Tweto, Odgen, 1976, Geologic map of the Craig 1° by 2° quadrangle:
U.S. Geological Survey Map No. I-972.
Walden Coal Company, 1981, Bourg Coal permit application to the Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Division, File C-021-81
Wyoming Fuel Company, 1981, Canadian Strip permit application to the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division, File C-026-81
Bourg Strip Mine.
